Two case studies on charity events.

CAUDWELL CHILDREN LEGENDS BALL

Battersea Evolution was the venue of choice for the star-studded Caudwell Children Legends Ball on 8 May. The evening saw a stream of high-profile guests, including Joan Collins, Boyzone and the Sugababes, arrive on the red carpet before making their way through to the bar for a champagne reception.

In the main space, revellers were treated to a three-course dinner that was created by Smart Hospitality, during which an auction took place. This was hosted by John Caudwell, chairman and founder of Caudwell Children's charity, along with celebrity ambassador David Gest.

The grand finale of the evening was a much-anticipated performance by Grammy Award-winning pop and R&B singer Whitney Houston.

The event raised £1.4m for the charity. "With a musical legend such as Whitney Houston performing for the first time in years to an intimate crowd, Battersea Evolution was the perfect backdrop," says Quantum event account manager Georgie Ferris.

WASTED YOUTH

As part of its work for suicide awareness campaign Wasted Youth, integrated marketing agency Unity staged a Johnny Cash-style gig at Pentonville prison on 27 August last year. The concert was for prisoners only, who were treated to performances from indie bands Dirty Pretty Things and The Enemy.

The event was the first of its kind ever to be held in a UK prison and was used to promote ticket sales for the public gig at Koko, which took place a few weeks later. As a result, the Koko gig sold out and raised £13,500 towards a related cause - a new helpline for the Campaign Against Living Miserably.

"The venue itself presented serious logistical challenges," reveals Unity co-founder Nik Done. "Aside from stringent security checks - with every single pencil, spare guitar string and paper clip having to be logged two days in advance - we were permitted only a handful of staff, extremely limited press passes and highly restricted photography and filming."
